Compassion is an international Christian child development and child advocacy ministry. Partnering with local churches, they are committed to the spiritual, economic, social and physical development of children living in extreme poverty in 26 countries, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
Compassion's work began in South Korea in 1952 when American evangelist Rev Everett Swanson felt compelled to help 35 children orphaned by the Korean conflict.
Today Compassion has a worldwide ministry where over one million children are now reaping the benefits of one man's clear, God-given vision.
Everett was inspired by Matthew 15:32 where Jesus says, 'I have compassion for these people - I do not want to send them away hungry' (NIV).
Compassion works in a number of key areas in 26 countris around the world. FOr more information on their work, please visit the Compassion Website
Child Survival Programme
Rescuing, nurturing and discipling little ones.
Every year, nearly 10 million children die from preventable causes before they reach their fifth birthday. Compassion’s Child Survival Programme works with the most vulnerable expectant mothers and their babies.
The programme supports and feeds malnourished children, while training mothers to sustain the growth and development of their little ones. This holistic programme demonstrates the way of Christ to each mother and encourages them to bring up their children in a Godly way.
Our goal is that these children not only survive, but thrive, and have a healthy start to our Child Sponsorship Programme.
Child Sponsorship Programme
Developing, discipling and equipping children for life.
In a world where more than a billion children live on less than two US dollars a day, Compassion believes connecting one child with one sponsor is the most strategic way to end childhood poverty. Through monthly donations, prayer and letter writing, sponsors invest in the lives of children living in extreme poverty.
Children attend church-based child development centres where they receive life-changing opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach. Every Compassion sponsored child has the opportunity to develop their God-given potential and be released from the poverty that has trapped their families for generations.
Leadership Development Programme
Educating, training and discipling servant leaders.
Our Leadership Development Programme identifies students from our Child Sponsorship Programme who have exceptional academic and Christian leadership potential. Students receive a first-class education and are trained and discipled to become the Christian leaders of the future. Every graduate is prepared to serve and use their considerable skills and influence to end poverty. They will transform their communities and nations.
Meeting critical needs.
Compassion is committed to meeting the needs of children at every stage of their development from their mother’s womb into early adulthood. Our RESPOND Initiatives play a vital role by removing barriers to effective child development. They complete the strategies of our core programmes by tackling issues such as AIDS, malaria, disaster response and unsafe drinking water.
